How AY Rank Monitors Brand Mentions Across the LLM Web
A brand mention on the right Reddit thread or G2 comparison page can be worth more than ten backlinks, because LLMs pull from those exact pages. We monitor every mention, score it for citation propagation potential, and route the high-leverage ones into outreach.

Traditional brand monitoring tools tell you when someone mentioned you. That is not enough anymore, you need to know whether that mention lives on a page that LLMs actually pull from. A mention on a low-authority blog and a mention on a top-3 Reddit thread for your category produce completely different outcomes in AI search. We track both, but we score and act differently.
The workflow.
6 steps · runs at daily
- 01
Daily mention crawl
Brand name + variants (typos, acronyms, founder names) pulled daily from Google News, Reddit, Hacker News, Twitter/X, YouTube, Product Hunt, G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, and the top 50 review/listicle sites for the client's category.
- 02
Source authority scoring
Every source is pre-scored by domain rating + AI-citation density (does this source already get cited by ChatGPT/Perplexity for any query?). A mention on a source that LLMs already cite is worth 5–10× a mention elsewhere.
- 03
Sentiment + context classification
Anthropic Claude classifies each mention as positive / neutral / negative and extracts the surrounding context, is the brand being recommended, criticized, compared, or listed? Comparison context (vs Competitor X) is flagged separately because it propagates to LLM "compare X vs Y" prompts.
- 04
Citation propagation check
For every high-authority mention, we re-run the brand's priority AI prompts 48–72 hours later and check whether the mention now appears as a cited source. This is the actual ROI loop, mentions that propagate are gold, mentions that do not get triaged.
- 05
Outreach + amplification
Positive high-authority mentions get amplified (LinkedIn, newsletter, internal link from the brand site). Negative high-authority mentions get a response within 24 hours. Missed mentions on high-citation sources get pitched directly via Clay + Smartlead.
- 06
Weekly mention digest
Slack post + PDF every Monday: new mentions, sentiment delta, citation-propagation wins, comparison-context flags, and the one action recommended for the week.

Common questions.
Why do some brand mentions matter more than others?
LLMs do not pull from every source equally. A mention on a top-3 Reddit thread for "best X tool" can propagate into ChatGPT recommendations within days, while a mention on a low-traffic blog will not move the needle at all. We score every source by AI-citation density before deciding what to amplify.
What does "citation propagation" mean in practice?
When a brand gets mentioned on a high-authority source, we re-run our priority AI prompts 48–72 hours later to check whether the mention now appears as a cited source in the answer. The mentions that propagate are the ones we double down on; the ones that do not get triaged or boosted with internal links.
How is this different from traditional brand monitoring?
Traditional tools (Mention.com, Brand24, Talkwalker) tell you when someone mentioned you. They do not tell you whether that mention will surface in a ChatGPT recommendation tomorrow. We treat mention monitoring as one half of an AI-citation loop, surfacing is step one, propagation is the goal.
Do you respond to negative mentions?
Yes, when they live on a high-authority source. Negative reviews that propagate into AI answers are 3–5× more damaging than the same review on a no-traffic site, because the AI engine will quote them in future recommendations. We respond within 24 hours and follow up with the platform when warranted.
